What is LateReviewer.com?

“I’m watching the dustiest films on the shelf to try and work out why the hell I bought them, and to offer recommendations on some of the films worth seeking out.”

Like everyone, I’ve spent a lot of time at home in the last year or so, and missing all kinds of pre-pandemic activity.

As a film fan, it’s been weird to see the cinematic landscape changing, with major releases either being shunted down the line to later dates, or released to fanfare but muted response online.

I miss the movies – the last time I was in a cinema was March 2020 for a double-bill of Robocop and Assault On Precinct 13, and while it was a good time at a great venue, I’d love to have that feeling of awe as the lights dim in front of a huge screen, surrounded by people eager to share the cinematic experience.

During the first lockdown, I had a bit of a rearranging session of my DVD shelves – over the last twenty-odd years, I’ve found myself hoarding hundreds of discs, but I hadn’t realised how many of them I either couldn’t remember watching or couldn’t remember buying.

I decided to set up Late Reviewer as a way to channel the negative energy I was feeling into something creative – and to help me have a bit of a spring clean of my physical media. I’m watching the dustiest films on the shelf to try and work out why the hell I bought them, and to offer recommendations on some of the films I reckon are most worth seeking out.

As with any artform, this is a completely subjective blog. My tastes might not be your tastes, but while I tend to lean towards the mainstream, I’ve got a geek streak a mile wide. I love some cult films, some foreign-language films, and will give every genre and era a go, so there should be something for everyone on here at some point.

I’m going to try not to punch down, because making a movie is a hell of an accomplishment and whether I like it or I don’t, that’s something to be impressed by. That being said, the Late Reviews will pretty much be a blow-by-blow account of my experience and thoughts while watching/rewatching the films, along with a bit of background, info on the disc, and my decision on whether I’ll keep them or get rid.

If you’re a film fan, hopefully you’ll find something you like, or maybe a new take on one of your favourites. Maybe I’ll make you laugh, or maybe I’ll get you curious to seek out a film you’ve never seen before. Either way, I’m open to hearing your thoughts about the films discussed here on Late Reviewer – you can find me on Twitter (@alatereviewer), or get in touch through the Contacts page.

Thanks for reading, I’ll see you at the movies!
