I’m a film fan. Pretty much all genres and any era, I’ll give something a watch if it catches my eye, I get a recommendation from someone, or I fall down a rabbit hole relating to a filmmaker after I’ve enjoyed something.
Because of that, I’ve wound up with shelves filled with hundreds of DVDs and Blu Rays which I’ve hoarded over the years – I wouldn’t exactly call it a collection, as it’s possibly too varied and not specific enough for that. Just hundreds of discs I’ve seen on a shelf or read about and taken a punt on.
During the first lockdown in 2020, I got sick of looking at the same spines on the shelves, so thought I’d have a bit of a rearranging session. In doing so, I stumbled across dozens and dozens of films which I either couldn’t remember buying or couldn’t remember watching, and as – gestures arms at the country – All This looks set to continue for a while, I figured it might not be a bad idea to channel the negative energy I was feeling into something creative.
In a nutshell then, Late Reviewer is me clearing out my shelves in front of anyone who’d care to notice. As I go through the pile, I’ll try to recall any autobiographical reason I might’ve had for picking up the disc in the first place, throw in a review and some trivia as I watch or rewatch it, then decide whether I’ll keep the film or give it away.
If you’ve read this far, thanks, I hope you’ll keep reading. I’m going to watch these movies and write these pieces anyway, but I’d love to think someone’s reading them and discovering a film they might want to seek out (or avoid).
See you at the movies!
