Here we go with another By The Decade post to help broaden my cinematic horizons and welcome your recommendations from a specific era – the last two weeks especially have thrown out some really great suggestions, and I think this one will be great too.
Following the previous 3 From The 30s, 4 From The 40s, 5 From The 50s, 6 From The 60s, 7 From The 70s and 8 From The 80s posts, we’ve had brilliant suggestions from readers for their favourite films from the 1930s, the 1940s, the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, and the 1980s.
I’ll be honest, the choices I’ve made this week are not my favourite films from that decade, they’re certainly not the best films of the decade, and I’m well aware they’re incredibly mainstream and obvious.
I guess that’s a disclaimer of sorts, but this isn’t a judgemental place, so feel free to shout up with some of your top films from the 1990s, whether you feel they’re respected or not!
Continue reading “By The Decade: 9 From The Nineties”I mentioned in my original piece for this week’s By The Decade that I struggled to whittle down my choices to just seven, and from the replies on Twitter, I’m really glad to see I wasn’t the only one!
There’s been a really outstanding response to #7FromThe70s, with some really great suggestions from a great cinematic decade, and from a few newcomers too, which is always nice.
Thanks so much to everyone who offered up their favourite films from the seventies, and the full list is below…
Continue reading “By The Decade: Your Favourite 70s Films”Here we go with another By The Decade post to help broaden my cinematic horizons and welcome your recommendations from a specific era – but this one, I’m more familiar with than others.
Following the previous 3 From The 30s, 4 From The 40s, 5 From The 50s and 6 From The 60s posts, and the brilliant suggestions from readers for their favourite films from the 1930s, the 1940s, the 1950s and the 1960s, there are loads of great suggestions for you to check out too in the By The Decades section.
I’ll be honest, I was pretty spoiled for choice this decade and it was tough to whittle them down but in selecting seven I realised just how mainstream some of the choices were. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with mainstream, especially when the quality is this high, but it means I’m hoping for some suggestions which offer something a bit new or unexpected.
As always, I’ll post the latest reader recommendations later, but in the meantime here are seven of my favourites from the 1970s.
Continue reading “By The Decade: 7 From The Seventies”Today would have been Peter Cushing’s 108th birthday.
Now I’m by no means a scholar of Cushing’s work, and he was so prolific I’ve probably only seen a fraction of the films he made over a career that spanned almost 50 years. But I’ve seen enough to know he was a different breed of film star, and I want to take a few minutes just to share the love.
Continue reading “In appreciation of Peter Cushing…”I’ve been listening to a lot of film podcasts recently – don’t worry, I’m not considering starting up my own, nobody needs that.
Hearing filmmakers and fans discuss their favourite movies and themes is always good fun, but the disparity between the types of enthusiasm shown towards different genres is really interesting to me – specifically, the passion of horror fans, which seems to be a more positive experience than fans of other genres.
Let me show my working…
